We were informed that, starting mid-March 2022, new internal spaces created in Google Chat will not interoperate with classic Hangouts. A new space will still interoperate if external users are allowed to join or if the space originates as a group conversation in classic Hangouts or Chat. Google recommends you use Google Chat exclusively to avoid missing any messages in spaces.
What do I need to do?
Here is Google's documentation about how to tell if you are using Hangouts vs. Google Chat.
Learn about the switch from classic Hangouts to Google Chat:
Classic Hangouts is being replaced by Google Chat for everyone. Some people may have
already been moved to Google Chat and may no longer be able to use classic Hangouts
on some platforms.
When you switch from classic Hangouts to Google Chat, you can:
- Do more with messages
- React to messages with emojis
- Use Smart Replies to save time
The message interoperability changes do not impact how Google Chat messages appear in classic Hangouts for:
- 1:1 direct messages
- Group conversations created from classic Hangouts
- Group conversations created from Google Chat
- Spaces upgraded from group conversations
- Any spaces created in Google Chat that allow external contacts to join
You can learn more about the differences between group conversations and spaces at About Spaces and Group Conversations. More information can be found at the Chat and Classic Hangouts Interoperability Help Center.
