Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship is an employer-driven, "earn while you learn" model that combines on-the-job training provided by the employer with related instruction at Washtenaw Community College. Apprenticeship is a flexible training strategy that can be customized to meet the needs of any business. Apprentices can be new hires or current employees who need skill upgrades.

Registered Apprenticeship for Students: We’ve streamlined our process to make it as easy as possible.

During this phase, your goal should be to become highly qualified as an apprentice applicant. There are several steps you can take to do increase your chances of being selected by a company:

  • Attend a session with a career advisor to build and edit or revise your resume and cover letter.
  • Meet with an Office of Apprenticeship staff member regularly to discuss new opportunities, and define what you’re specifically looking for.
  • Continuously apply to opportunities you are interested in. Be persistent!
  • Prepare by doing mock interviews with a career advisor.
  • Let the Office of Apprenticeship staff know that you’ve been hired.
  • Communicate with employer to determine start date, worksite orientation and work schedule.
  • Attend the Apprenticeship Orientation:
    1. Complete program overview and requirements for each semester.
    2. Set an academic schedule and timeline (this can change, to some degree once you get started).
    3. Walk through the course selection and registration process.
    4. Discuss the tuition payment process (if your employer is covering your tuition).
