Photo: Work Study Students at the Center for Sustainability and Resilience
Hi, everyone! I’m the Faculty Lead for the Center for Sustainability and Resilience and I have a new group of Work-Study students to introduce for the semester! Wanda, Robert, and Sarah are working hard to help everyone learn about sustainability and resilience. Sustainability can be defined as maintaining resources for use now and in the future and resilience, as keeping people and ecosystems healthy in times of change. Without further ado, here are the students!
Wanda
Greetings! My name is Wanda and this is my second semester as a part of the CSR, and my final semester here at WCC as a Reconnect Student. I’m thrilled for the opportunity to continue working toward campus-wide sustainability efforts- both old and new. Through my academic experience, I’ve rekindled my passion for conservation and preservation and used my knowledge to plan and develop my own permaculture and pollinator gardens. Some of my favorite features of WCC includes the Seed Library, Nature Trail, and Food Forest. During my work experience I aim to encourage other students to learn how they can reduce their carbon footprint, as well as recognize the importance of the Great Lakes as a shared resource.
Robert
Hi everyone! My name is Robert, and I’m a second-year student on the pre-engineering track. I’m excited to be joining this team! I grew up surrounded by nature and agriculture, having been born and raised in Indonesia with a father passionate about farming. That upbringing gave me a deep appreciation for the environment, and the WCC campus brings back that same excitement—from its beautiful trails to the well-maintained food forest. Through this work-study program, I hope to not only help maintain these features but also contribute to expanding the campus’s sustainability efforts and inspiring more students to get involved.
Sarah
Hello my name is Sarah and I am a LSA transfer student here at WCC. I plan on majoring in Sociology and minoring in Environmental Science in an effort to further connect the interdependency of the two. I’m exceptionally excited to be a part of CSR and assist in furthering the mission and awareness of sustainability on campus and off! When it comes to sustainability initiatives on campus I’m especially interested in the walking trail and support of our native plants, along with working in the food forest and supporting the natural ecosystem and pollinators. Off campus I’m a naturalist that not only advocates for sustainability in our natural world, but the kinship that humans and plants need in order to survive together. I look forward to working with Students for Sustainability to further create educational events to continue to raise environmental awareness.
As you watch the early spring bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) and yellow trout lily (Erythronium americanum) emerge through the leaf litter and the bluebirds (Sialia sialis) and robins (Turdus migratorias) zoom though the landscape on mating displays, I hope you’ll enjoy our blogposts! Happy Spring, all!
