Washtenaw Community College is celebrating Earth Week from March 28 – April 16, 2024. The events give us a chance to reflect on our relationship with the Earth. Can we tweak our practices to live more intentionally, to consume fewer resources, and to live more lightly upon the Earth?

The Center for Sustainability and Resilience has teamed up with other campus groups to offer fabulous events for enjoyment and reflection! Some events, like our Book Club event, have already occurred. Upcoming highlights are listed below:

On Monday, April 1st The Students for Sustainability Club Officers are leading a Tour of WCC’s Natural Areas! This tour will take you around campus from deciduous forests to coniferous forests, to marshy retention ponds. Explore these areas for the chance to spot white-tailed deer, species of native birds and plants, and so much more.

On Tuesday, April 2nd and Wednesday, April 3rd, we are offering a Sustainability Scavenger Hunt on campus, where students will find and photograph sustainable practices on campus. There will also be exciting prizes for those who get at least 6 pictures of sustainable practices on campus from the list.

On Wednesday, April 3rd, is a panel discussion on Waste Not (Plastics!) We’ll hear from three experts in the field on waste, plastic, and plastic waste. We’ll also learn how to stop wasting so much money and plastic.

Also on Wednesday, April 3, is Building the Motor City Bee Highway, a Zoom event about urban farming and beekeeping featuring Brian Peterson-Roest, founder of Bees in the D.

On April 4, we are celebrating Earth Day at WCC. Our Harmony in Action Event allows participants tostroll the tables to learn about sustainability and conservation and to celebrate Earth Day!

Also on April 4 is the Trash Pickup Palooza Event. Students will go around campus picking up trash. They’ll be able to win special prizes for most unusual trash and best trash story!

On April 9, we have a Poetry Sustains Event on the Theme of Local Resources. This Zoom event will allow participants to have the chance to both hear and read aloud beautiful poems from Michigan authors.

Finally, on April 16, we’ll have a Seed Pods Event that is a part of the Crafting Calm: Monthly Wellness Workshop.

Many thanks to all the groups hosting these events, including the Sustainability Literacy Task Force (SLTF), the Center for Sustainability and Resilience (CSR), Student Development Activities (SDA), the Students for Sustainability Club, the WCC Poetry Club, and the Bailey Library.
