WCC Partners with My Green Michigan to Expand its Composting Services

WCC has been exploring ways to increase its diversion of food waste from landfill, and reduce the amount of single use plastic it consumes.

One new partner offers a solution which helps to address both.

My Green Michigan collects of all types of food waste, and BPI certified products such as bags and tableware, for composting. The products collected are composted at Spurt Industries in Wixom, MI.

WCC’s first collection happened on Friday March 14th at the Morris Lawrence Building. Approximately 100lbs of food waste was collected for composting in the first week of service. This is expected to increase rapidly as WCC moves into a busier period of events. Initially this expanded service is only available for use by Creative Dining at the Morris Lawrence Building. As the service becomes established it may be expanded to include the reintroduction of Zero Waste Lunches in the next few months.

The World Food Program states that food loss and food waste contribute an estimated 8-10% of global greenhouse gas. Until now WCC has only be able to compost uncooked fruits and vegetables, egg shells, coffee, and tea bags. This has been done in the campus vermi composting system. Despite the success of this system, working with a partner who is able to collect a wider range of food, will enable WCC to divert more food from landfill. Additionally, as My Green Michigan is able to compost BPI certified materials such as coffee cups, plates, and utensils, WCC has an opportunity to reduce the amount of single use plastic thrown away.
