Space Clean Outs – What You Need to Know

June 24, 2024 Rebecca Andrews

Are you planning on cleaning out an office, closet, or technical space?

BEFORE YOU START contact the Recycle Operations Department for delivery of containers and sorting advice.

You should always prioritize the following when cleaning out:

  • REDUCE: Please do not discard items that are still of use to you or those in offices around you.
  • REUSE: WCC’s property disposition and office supply redistribution system redistributes, resells, and donates items that are still in good condition, read how here. Read how to use property disposition
  • RECYCLE: Paper, card, plastics (numbers 1-7), metal items and e-waste can all be recycled. Read about WCC’s top 10 recycling mistakes

If you have equipment for disposal it should be processed through Property Disposition.

Space Clean Outs

If you are clearing a space the Recycle Operations Department can assist with ensuring that the process is smooth and sustainable. Large sorting carts and bins can be requested from the Recycle Department and delivered to the space in advance of the clean out. We typically sort four ways:

  • Paper and Card – Blue Bin
  • Broken Metal Items, Chargers and Wires, and Small Ewaste – Grey Bin
  • Reusable supplies and knick knacks – White Bin
  • Landfill – Black Bin

Using this method very little material gets sent to landfill.

Confidential Shredding

Although the most secure way to recycle confidential documents is to shred them in your office suite, the Recycle Operations Department will gladly collect and shred boxes of confidential material if shredding equipment is not available to you.

To request our services please remember the following:

  • Only confidential documents should be in a shred box. All other paper can be recycled through the bins in your office area.
  • The Recycle Operations departmental shredder has limited capacity. Regular pickup requests of smaller quantities will help reduce departmental turnaround times and maximize machine usefulness.

Thank you!
