Time is running out on an opportunity for local residents between the age of 21 and 24 to capitalize on a State of Michigan program that provides tuition-free community college scholarships.
In October 2023, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the state was temporarily allowing those over the age of 21 to enroll in Michigan Reconnect, which was previously limited to those 25 and older.
However, those in the younger age bracket must enroll no later than the fall semester of 2024 to take advantage of the temporary expansion.
WCC’s fall semester begins August 26. Course options are currently available at wccnet.edu/schedule and registration for new students opens March 14.
Visit wccnet.edu/enroll to begin the application process.
Since Michigan Reconnect began less than three years ago, more than 132,000 Michiganders have applied to the program.
To be eligible, students must have a high school diploma or equivalency, have not yet completed a college degree, and have lived in Michigan for a year or more.
The Reconnect age expansion brings thousands of students one step closer to earning a tuition-free or reduced tuition degree or certificate from a Michigan community or tribal college.
Students not already enrolled must complete these steps to take advantage of this limited-time scholarship:
- Apply for the Michigan Reconnect Scholarship at michigan.gov/Reconnect.
- 2. Apply to WCC or a Michigan community or tribal college of your choice.
- 3. File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- 4. Enroll in your program of study and begin coursework no later than the fall semester
2024.
Any currently enrolled students who fit the Michigan Reconnect profile should contact the Financial Aid office for additional information on applying the Reconnect Scholarship to their tuition bill after filing a FAFSA.
