Given the ever rising gas prices and a growing interest in preserving the earth’s
natural resources Allen Day, faculty member in the Automotive Services department
recently gave a timely and informative presentation on how consumers can save money
by improving fuel
economy with their cars.
The presentation titled, “Automotive Talk and Tour: Making The Most of Your Fuel,” was part of the 2014 Sustainability Literacy Task Force calendar of events.
The WCC Sustainability Literacy Task Force [SLTF] is a multi-disciplinary committee of WCC instructors whose passion is to educate people about the benefits of sustainability and using the planet’s resources wisely. Members include Dale Petty [Industrial Technology], Emily Thompson Ph.D. [Biology], Maryam Barrie [English], and Chef Alice Gannon-Boss [Culinary Arts].
Attendees left Day’s presentation with a list of specific ways to conserve fuel including:
- The importance of maintaining the correct air pressure in tires
- Planning routes to allow travel at the most efficient range of speeds
- Keeping a car’s brakes well maintained to prevent drag on the engine
“We should all be engaged in ways designed help conserve energy – and a good first place to start is with our cars,” said Day. “My presentation gave tips that are easy to implement and if followed, with help save on gasoline usage, reduce wear and tear on cars and allow for travel in a manner that will allow for the most efficient use of fuel.”
Day added a practical touch to the presentation by giving each attendee a tire pressure gauge.
“Allen’s presentation fits right in with the mission of the SLTF,” said SLTF committee member Emily Thompson. “By focusing on fuel economy with our cars, we will reduce oil dependence costs, increase energy sustainability, reduce climate change – and at the same time, save money. It’s the responsible approach we should all take to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in which to live.”
