John E. Lawrence, chair of the Performing Arts department, took the WCC Jazz Ensemble to the legendary jazz club for a Father’s Day performance on June 15.
The ensemble is comprised of WCC students enrolled in the music production engineering certificate program. Band members include: Shawn Wayne Donaldson (guitar) Paul Goff-Stoner (drums), William Marshall Bennett (piano) and Rafael Freitas (bass guitar).
The band played a repertoire of music in honor of Father’s Day including:
- Song for My Father by Horace Silver
- Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers/Ralph MacDonald
- Autumn Leaves by Hungarian-French composer
Joseph Kosm
“All of the great jazz masters have played at Baker’s such as John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, Earl Klugh, Myles Davis and many more,” said Lawrence. “For our students to share the same stage as these legends and walk in the footprints of their greatness is an incredible honor. We look forward to many more appearances,” Lawrence concluded.
