Ann Arbor-based Extang, a leading manufacturer of truck bed accessories, sponsored the Kick Start ‘N’ Back To School event held at the end of August to welcome new students enrolled in programs in the division of Advanced Technologies & Public Service Careers.
The event was held in the front plaza of the Larry L. Whitworth Occupational Education building, where students were able to see Extang’s customized Ford F-350 Super Duty Lariat truck — which was customized by WCC faculty and students from the college’s Custom Cars & Concepts program and Auto Body Repair department.
Back in 2018, Extang reached out to the college to modify and paint the truck, also known as the “Ultimate Tailgate Truck.” At that time, WCC instructor Tim VanSchoick worked with about 20 students and staff members on the truck, which was shown at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, the world’s largest automotive aftermarket show. The truck features a slide-out game table, built-in cooler, built-in BBQ grill as well as an OLED television and sound system in its truck bed cover.
The partnership between WCC and Extang with this student-focused event benefits both the college and the company.
“We are excited to continue our support for our local community college,” said Extang Vice President of Sales Steve Kelley. “We are pleased to find any good, useful ways we can give back to the college for the great work they’ve done for us, by modifying and painting our Ultimate Tailgate pick-up truck. This sponsorship is just a small token of our appreciation.”
More than 300 students attended the event and enjoyed barbeque cuisine, games and music. “The goal of this event is to provide students with an opportunity to cultivate a sense of belonging; facilitate new connections with their peers, faculty and staff; and inform them of available student services,” said Loren Townes, who was recently promoted from college relations coordinator to manager of community engagements and partnerships at WCC.
Representatives from the WCC Foundation, the Entrepreneurship Center, Career Transitions and Public Safety departments, the Student Resource Center and college success coaches were also on hand to provide an overview of student resources.
The event, now held annually, continues to grow.
“Each year has built off the previous year, and with the support of Extang this year, we were able to enhance the overall experience – we’re grateful to them,” said AVP of Workforce and Community Development and Dean of Advanced Technologies & Public Service Careers Brandon Tucker.
“Extang’s support this year further strengthens our partnership and is only the beginning of an even larger one for years to come.” l
