Back in April, Washtenaw Community College announced it was freezing all tuition rates and fees for the 2020-21 academic year in recognition of the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The college’s Board of Trustees took that one step further by reducing the cost of distance learning credits for students who live, work or own property in-district.
Because the pandemic will impact WCC’s Fall 2020 on-campus course offerings, the college lowered the cost of distance learning classes for indistrict students to just $95 per credit hour, matching the price those students would have paid for face-to-face instruction.
The sentiment raised during the June 23 WCC Board of Trustees meeting was that because many classes were moved online for the safety of students, they should not have to pay additional tuition in exchange for that safety.
The trustees unanimously approved the recommendation.
WCC’s $95-per-credit-hour tuition rate makes it the most affordable higher education option in the state. The annual tuition of $2,280 for a fulltime student at WCC is 78% less than the average cost of the nation’s public four-year institutions ($10,230).
