Supporting Students in Recovery
Dependence on alcohol and other drugs is a serious national public health issue touching
rich and poor, all regions of the country, and all ethnic and social groups. According
to the American Psychiatric Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of June 2020, 13% of Americans reported starting or increasing substance use
as a way of coping with stress or emotions related to COVID-19. If you're worried
about your own drug or alcohol use, or that of a friend or family member, check some of the warning signs to look for.
Washtenaw Community College's Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) is continuing to support students in recovery by holding weekly virtual meetings
and other events.
From 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, the WCC Collegiate Recovery Program is hosting
a virtual Open Speaker Event. The CRP's student co-presidents, Brendo and Chynna,
will share their addiction recovery journeys and what has inspired them to stay connected
to their recovery supports and to their studies.
WCC's CRP is co-sponsoring this event with the WCC Counseling & Career Planning department
to highlight the intersection of mental health and recovery support. WCC's Licensed
Professional Counselor, Kari Mapes, will join the discussion, answer student questions
and share mental health resources.
