Clinical Education and Clinical Affiliates

Students enrolled in clinical courses will be assigned to various clinical education centers affiliated with the radiography program throughout their two-year curriculum. After the Clinical Coordinator receives all required medical documentation, verifies health insurance, and completes background checks, students will be assigned to a clinical education center (CEC) before the fall semester.

The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for clinical placement, striving to ensure fair and equitable assignments across southeastern Michigan, covering five counties. The goal is to provide comprehensive clinical education experience over the two years. While efforts are made to consider location and minimize transportation challenges, the quality of the clinical education takes precedence The following are:

  1. Upon notification of acceptance to the program, students must purchase an account from a college-designated vendor to obtain a criminal background check. Specific information on the college-designated vendor, health records, and deadline dates will be included in the program acceptance letter and/or provided at the mandatory orientation session.
  2. Students will be required to submit health records annually while in the program and must complete any other health requirements as designated by the clinical sites.
  3. Students may be required to attend a hospital orientation session or participate in web-based training depending upon the requirements of the clinical site.
  4. Students should anticipate traveling up to 60 miles one way from the WCC campus to their clinical sites. Students are responsible for their transportation to and from all clinical assignments.
  5. Student clinical rotations are primarily during the day shift (7 am–5:30 pm variable 8-hour shifts – site dependent).
  6. Students are required to complete a minimum of 80 hours in off-shift rotations, which may include afternoons, mid-shift, and weekends, with rotations potentially starting as early as noon, depending on the clinical site. Please note that off-shift rotations will replace the regularly scheduled day shifts; they are not additional hours. Students are eligible to begin off-shift hours during RAD 150 (4th semester)
  7. Students are required to provide their own hospital scrubs and maintain a clean, neat, and professional appearance.
  8. All Radiography (RAD) courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C-/1.7 and all support courses to the program must be completed with a minimum grade of C/2.0 unless otherwise specified.
  9. Strict policies regarding "missed" clinical days are also applied. Any time missed due to illness, etc. must be made up before the end of a given semester.

Students are assigned to a specific clinical site beginning in the fall semester of their first year. At the beginning of their second year (5th semester), students are assigned to a different hospital, where they will complete their clinical education. Students attend clinical and campus classes according to the following schedule:

  • FALL clinical= 2 days/week AND class= 3 days
  • WINTER clinical= 2 days/week AND class=2 days
  • SPRING clinical= 4 days/week AND class= 1 day
  • FALL clinical= 3 days/week AND class= 2 days
  • WINTER clinical= 3 days/week AND class= 2 days
  • SPRING clinical= 5 days/week
