The Art of Cathy Jacobs

Sep 9, 2024 - Jan 5, 2025

Please join us for a reception on September 20, 2024 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. with light refreshments and Artist Talk by Cathy Jacobs.

Cathy Jacobs finds visual connection with the world by observing the subtle shifts in light and color in the everyday environment.  She constructs woven, 3-dimensional artworks that balance between painting, sculpture, and textiles. Whether it’s experiencing the world through fog, gazing through long blades of grass, or glimpsing the sky through the interlaced branches of a forest, she discovers beauty in the act of looking through multiple layers. As a response to this, screens and the act of seeing through many layers are important concepts in the making of her dimensional works.

As a painter by training, her focus lies in layering woven screens to generate vibrant fields of color. She is fascinated by the ever-shifting movement of the wavy patterns, known as the moiré effect, as well as the visual blending of colors that occur when viewing overlapping screens.

The 17 artworks and installations in this show were created between 2016 and 2024. They encompass handweaving, painting, sculpture, and ink drawing.

Cathy Jacobs received a BFA in painting from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1996. She later discovered weaving and textiles as an MFA candidate at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

She has exhibited artwork throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, most notably at the South Bend Museum of Art in Indiana, World of Threads Festival in Ontario, Canada, the Architectural Digest Design Show in New York City, SOFA Expo (with Next Step Studio and Gallery) in Chicago, Cluster Crafts in London, England, and Museu Têxtil of New Orleans and Sao Paolo, Brazil. She lives with her husband in Ann Arbor and works at her studio in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
